Minister Rohee launches booklet titled

'Reform of the European Union Sugar Regime -

ACP Sugar Industries Under Threat'

In an effort to educate the public on the implications of the impending reform of the European Union Sugar Regime, set to take effect in July 2006, and work being done to address this all-important issue, the Minister of Foreign Trade and International Cooperation, Hon. Clement J. Rohee, launched a booklet comprising relevant articles, speeches, presentations, and other documents, titled Reform of the European Union Sugar Regime-ACP Sugar Industries Under Threat.

It is no secret that the proposed reform measures, if implemented as they stand, will have severe consequences that will affect economies, industries, lives and livelihoods in the African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) group of countries.

The launch of this publication is, therefore, relevant and timely.  It is hoped that readers of this publication will develop a better understanding of the proposed reform of the European Union Sugar Regime, and other pertinent issues.

The publication was launched on October 11, 2005, at the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre, High Street, Kingston, Georgetown

Speakers at the launching included H.E. President Bharrat Jagdeo, Hon. Clement J. Rohee, Dr. Ian Mc Donald, Chief Executive Officer, Sugar Association of the Caribbean, Mr. Ronald Ali, Chief Executive Officer, Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO), and Mr. Komal Chand, President of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers' Union (GAWU).

Limited copies of the booklet are available, and can be sourced from the Office of the Minister.
